Brewing Knowledge Friday
Brewing Knowledge Friday meeting focused on discussing classroom management and teacher-student interactions, particularly around homework completion. Teachers shared experiences of handling situations when students do not complete their homework, with Sakshi and Samta describing their approaches, which include speaking to students privately and using positive reinforcement, such as stars for their favourite colours. The discussion then shifted to a book called “What Did You Ask At School Today?” which explores how nature and nurture influence human behaviour, using examples to illustrate the differences between genetic and environmental influences on traits like kindness and intelligence.
My Good School
The group discussed the content of episode 22; Lihaaze Insaniyat ‘Respect for Humanity’, which covers Guru Nanak’s travels in India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, highlighting lost heritage in Pakistan. The discussion covered technical details for filming, the historical significance of Guru Nanak’s visits to various locations, and the challenges faced during production in Afghanistan. The group explored Guru Nanak’s teachings on unity, equality, and spiritual pursuit, while also addressing the current state of religious communities in the region and the philosophical meaning behind his messages.
Teaching is like having a garden
When I look at the flowers in the small garden near my house, I am reminded of the ongoing discussion about the balance between nature and nurture in teaching and gardening. The very nature of the flower is to bloom, and some even give out fragrance, but would they blossom if the gardener did not prune at the right time, did not give them enough nutrition, and did not provide the care they need? The question we discussed this week in Brewing Knowledge, based on Kamal Mukunda’s book, was about nature and nurture: how do they influence human behaviour, and how do genetics and environmental factors interact with one another?
